Can you live in a log cabin permanently?
The short answer – yes. You can live in a log cabin permanently. There are a lot of things to consider before making the move. From planning permission to building regulations, there will be requirements that need to be met for you to live in a log cabin. You can also choose to build your log cabin wherever you want, as long as you own the land that it’s built on.
Can you legally live in a log cabin in the UK?
It’s not illegal to live in a log cabin. Take living in a caravan for example, as long as it’s safe and provides suitable housing conditions, you can live in it. However, as stated above, there will be regulations that need to be considered. The beauty of building a log cabin to your specifications is that you get to decide on the living space. You can choose to have an ensuite or you can choose to have a regular bathroom. You can even choose between one storey or two.
Do you need planning permission to live in a log cabin?
We aren’t going to sugarcoat it – you do need planning permission to live in a log cabin. Although in many cases, you don’t need planning permission to build a log cabin, you will if it’s intended to be a lived-in property.
Can I put a log cabin in my garden and rent it out?
Straight to the point – no. If you build a log cabin in your garden, the structure will not be considered appropriate for living in as a residency. You are free to build a log cabin (as long as it adheres to permission regulations) in your garden for the purpose of additional living space.
Additional living space would be considered as a home office or a home gym. A residence intended for letting would not be considered an additional living space that you can build in your garden. If you were to build a log cabin on land you own elsewhere, this would be acceptable to let as long as you gain the appropriate planning permission and licenses.
